On the Saturday of the August long weekend, the Ponderosa Guild offered a natural dye workshop at the Rotary Centre fore the Arts Painting Room. We did have some challenges with power outlets but none the less our results were satisfying and in my opinion, magical
I love natural dyes. It's like a surprise every time because, even though you know approximately what you will get for a colour, there are so many factors that can change the outcome - water, wool, materials, where you live......and so on.
There were 5 skeins of natural dk weight yarn, variations of silk, a few wool/silk blend skeins, silk roving and some sparkle
We used onion skins, tansy flowers and stems, cochineal and carrot tops.
We used alum as our mordant and though our cochineal wasn't so bright pink, it was definitely a vibrant purple/mauve.
We will be offering another plant dye workshop on November 30, 2024. We will be using different dye plants and if you did the first workshop, you can add to your 25g skeins of plant dyed yarn.
