Workshop Details

This 2-part workshop will focus on the process of dyeing cotton with natural plant dyes. Cotton fibre requires a scouring process and a tannin process before it will accept the natural dye. The first class will concentrate on preparing the fabric for dyeing and the second will give the participant an opportunity to try a variety of different plant dyes and thereby different palettes. This is a class that gives you the skill set to experience plant dyeing on cellulose fiber. The class is limited to 6 people and all supplies will be included. Every participant will receive 6 handkerchiefs and all dye and scouring materials are included in the cost of the workshop. We will all be dyeing the organic cotton handkerchief from Maiwa which is a 10x10 “ square. There may also be the opportunity to add smaller pieces of linen, cotton, yarn or upcycled material to the dye pots. The scouring and tannin process for the extra pieces will have to be done on the participants own, between classes. All the materials to do these extra fibers will be available to purchase at the time of the class. There will also be the possibility to try some shibori techniques before the actual dye process to obtain a pattern on the fabric. The workshop will be taught by Judith Mueller, a Kelowna based mixed-media fiber artist who has been playing with natural dyes for over 30 years. Dates: Wednesday July 8th 6-9pm Sunday July 12th 10am – 3pm Location: Studio 204 at the RCA Guild Members use coupon code FIBREART2021 at checkout for $10 off this workshop.
