Workshop Details
Indigo is a unique dyestuff that requires a more extreme transformation than other sorts of natural dye materials as it is initially insoluble in water. Because of the chemistry it seems much more intimidating than it is, so the goal of this informal workshop is to demystify some of this process and give you the knowledge to set up a vat of any size in your own space. You will be briefly shown how to set up what Maiwa calls a "workhorse vat" (instructions are on their website) which depending on the acidity can be used for either cellulose or protein fibres. Participants must bring material to dye. * Keep the total weight of material under 1.5 lbs (I will have a scale with me) * Materials should fit in the dimensions of a 15 l bucket (like a Rona or Home Depot style bucket) * Materials should be made of natural fibres, either cellulose or protein * Fabric and yarns are both acceptable. You can also dye basket making material as well as things like cotton trim. * Materials should be scoured (washed) if possible (https://maiwahandprints.blogspot.com/2010/12/natural-dyes-scouring.html) * Gloves * A dust mask (I do have some extras) * Safety goggles are also a bonus but not essential * A lunch Date: June 10 Time: 10:00am - 3:00pm Location: Jody's Farm address will be sent to participants closer to the date There is an additional $10 fee for materials payable to the instructor on the day of the workshop. Guild Members use Coupon Code FIBREART2021 at checkout for $10 off this workshop.
